variation selector-63

Variation Selector-63

Variation Selector-63 is an invisible code point that requests a particular glyph variant after a compatible base character. It belongs in registered ideographic variation sequences for Han characters, not in ordinary messages and not as a standalone emoji. The selector number alone does not tell you which glyph to draw.

What 󠄮 means

It requests a registered glyph variant after a compatible base character. VS63's own code point, U+E012E, has no standalone picture or message. A variation sequence is a base character followed by a selector; for Han characters used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing, a registered pair can choose one intended set of glyph shapes in plain text.

The design was proposed in 1997 as a Unicode variant tag for Plane 14, its special-purpose plane. Because different scholars, governments, and publishers needed different Han glyph shapes, the purpose was to preserve a precise choice in plain text when font choice alone was not enough. Its meaning is relational, not regional: the full pair and its registration decide the requested rendering. It is a computer encoding mechanism, not a historical mark with a pre-Unicode cultural meaning.

Why does it disappear?

Because variation selectors are designed to stay invisible. When a supported base-plus-selector pair exists, a renderer can choose its registered glyph; when the pair is unsupported or unregistered, the base should render normally and VS63 should remain invisible. The blank result is a rendering or pairing issue, not an emoji style.

Use VS63 only after a documented base character and only as part of a known pair. As of 2026-08-03, the current IVD data has no registered sequence containing U+E012E, so there is no documented CJK glyph target to recommend for this selector alone.

Technical and invisible, it belongs in text engineering, not casual conversation.

Do not send VS63 by itself; it may vanish and leave the recipient with no intended glyph.

VS63 sent by itself
No standalone message; treat it as a stray invisible control.
After a registered Han base
Requests the registered glyph subset for that character.
After an unregistered base
No defined visual change; the base renders normally.

Questions people ask

2

Is VS63 an emoji?

No. It is an invisible text-control character with no emoji presentation or vendor artwork; it only participates in a glyph-variation sequence.

Can I pair VS63 with any CJK character?

No. Only a registered base-plus-selector pair has an agreed rendering; the selector number is not a menu of variants, and an unregistered pair is not suitable for text interchange.
