variation selector-94

Variation Selector-94

78/240

VS94 has no meaning by itself: it can request a particular drawn form only after a base character in a registered pair. An ideographic variation sequence (IVS) can preserve the form of a Chinese character also used in Japanese or Korean writing, but the IVD version dated 2026-08-03 contains no registered pair using VS94.

Text symbol

What 󠅍 means

It can request a drawn form only inside a registered pair. A variation sequence is a character followed by a selector. For Han characters—Chinese characters also used in Japanese and Korean writing—the Unicode Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) registers pairs that tell software which drawn form, or glyph, to use. That can preserve the requested form in personal names or historical text.

Early design work is documented in a Plane 14 variant-tag proposal dated 1997-12-01. It describes plain-text cases where a name, place name, dictionary, or historical reference needs a particular drawn form. The Unicode IVD provides a shared registry for such pairs. In its version dated 2026-08-03, no registered pair uses VS94.

Technical encoding control, not a message symbol: it only works after a base character in a registered pair.

Don't append it to style text or turn a character into emoji; it is not a general presentation switch.

Questions people ask

1

Why does VS94 look blank?

Expected. A variation selector has no visible mark of its own; if a pair is invalid or unsupported, the base character appears as usual and the selector is ignored.
