What 🨠 means
It marks a variant piece; the problem defines its role.
In fairy chess, problems introduce new pieces or change the rules. A turned rook marks a special piece, but the legend supplies its move. Some turned pieces have familiar assignments—the turned queen commonly marks a grasshopper—but this rook has no universal role.
A 1943 account describes fairy-chess problems with invented pieces and altered boards or goals. A 2017 Unicode proposal reproduces a published problem using a turned rook. “Turned” names an abstract notation form; it does not mean a physical rook is flipped over on the board.
How should I read or type it?
