Historically called Cuan or Wei, older Yi writing varied by region and served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. One tradition credits Aki with devising that older script during the Tang dynasty (618–907); its oldest surviving inscription dates to 1485. The Liangshan Yi writing system containing ꒹ was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980.
