Yi Radical Hxuo

16/55

꒟ is a radical of the Yi script, written by the Yi (Nuosu) people of south-west China. Dictionaries use radicals like it to sort and find syllable signs by shape. It looks like a bracket ( or a letter C, but it is neither, and “Hxuo” is a label, not its pronunciation.

What ꒟ means

It is a shape key for finding signs in Yi dictionaries. Standard Yi is a syllabic script: each sign stands for one whole spoken syllable, and the Nuosu language of the Liangshan mountains in Sichuan is written with it daily on signs, in schools and in print.

With so many syllable signs, a dictionary needs a way to look them up by appearance. Unicode encodes 55 Yi radicals, recurring components such as this curve, so dictionaries and indexes can list them. Each radical is named after the syllable sign it most resembles; “Hxuo” is that kind of label, not a sound ꒟ makes.

Outside Yi texts it is sometimes picked as a decorative curve in nicknames. It is not a punctuation mark, so it won't pair with ) and search engines treat it as a Yi character.

Where does standard Yi writing come from?

From old priestly manuscripts, regularised by the 1980 Liangshan standard. Traditional Yi writing varied from place to place; priests (bimo) kept texts on rituals, divination, medicine and genealogies. The 15th-century Chenghua bell inscriptions are among the earliest reliably dated examples. To spread literacy, a fixed syllabary was devised in 1974 and made official in 1980. Its radical lookup resembles Chinese dictionary radicals, but Yi signs do not come from Chinese characters.

Questions people ask

2

Can I use ꒟ as a bracket?

Better not. It only looks like one; it has no matching closing mark, spacing may differ, and screen readers and search treat it as a Yi character.

Why do I see an empty box?

Your device lacks a Yi font. Windows includes Microsoft Yi Baiti; elsewhere, installing a font with Yi support, such as Noto Sans Yi, fixes it.

Why is ꒟ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
