What ꒳ means
It helps sort Yi syllable signs in dictionaries.
In Liangshan Yi, this radical groups syllable signs by a shared stroke. It is a lookup aid, not a word. Chinese-character dictionaries use the same idea: search by a written part.
Unicode dates the oldest surviving monumental Yi examples—formal inscriptions—to about 500 years ago; a University of Washington overview also reports claims of inscriptions from the Western Han (206 BC–AD 9). Yi books served ritual, healing, magic, and family history. Liangshan’s standard was promulgated in 1980; a 2024 Unicode proposal lists education, reference books, public signs, and writing.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꒳ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
