What ꁲ means
ꁲ stands for one syllable in Yi writing. “bbyt” is its rendering in Latin letters, not a translation; surrounding syllables supply the word’s meaning. By itself, ꁲ does not identify a whole word or message. It is written text, not an emoji.
How did Yi writing develop?
Yi writing developed through regional traditions and later standardization. Claims of very early origins remain contested. The earliest securely dated surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485.
Before standardization, bimo—Yi ritual specialists—used local forms in texts for funerals, healing, divination, religious rites, magic, and genealogies. A standardized form for Liangshan Nuosu, one variety of Yi, was developed in 1974 for school and print use; it represents that variety, not every regional Yi tradition.
Traditional Yi signs are described as a writing tradition of their own, separate from signs adapted from Chinese writing. Naxi picture writing is a neighboring southwestern tradition, not another name or reading for ꁲ.
