What ꀧ means

It represents a Yi syllable, not an English translation.

Standard Liangshan romanization writes this syllable as “bo.” Final t, p, and x mark tones; with none of those endings, it has the midlevel tone. The surrounding Yi word or sentence supplies the context for translation.

The earliest widely cited securely dated surviving Yi-script inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485. Claims of older stone, bronze, pottery, or bone evidence exist, but their dates and the script’s place of origin remain debated.

what was Yi writing used for?

It preserved ritual and family knowledge. Before standardization, traditional regional Yi manuscripts were kept by bimo, village ritual specialists, for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical uses, including mourning rites, ancestral sacrifice, divination, and family histories.

A standardized Liangshan Yi script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It serves one Yi variety, not every regional tradition; its speakers are known as Nuosu. Someone who reads the modern standard may not automatically read an older local manuscript.

A historical label, “Cuan wen,” is linked to earlier or regional Yi writing in Yunnan. Traditional Yi ideographs appear not to derive from Han ideographs.

how to type ꀧ
