yi syllable byt

Yi syllable byt

51/1165

ꀲ is a syllable sign in Yi writing, including Nuosu, one Yi language; “byt” is its reading in Latin letters, not an English translation. Its place in a Yi word gives it meaning. The Liangshan standard is one later form in a regional writing tradition.

Text symbol

What ꀲ means

It is one Yi syllable, read as “byt.”

In the standardized Liangshan system, “byt” is a Latin-letter spelling of the reading. Its final “t” marks a high, level tone: the voice stays high through the syllable. The spelling is not an English gloss.

By itself, ꀲ identifies a syllable but not a dependable English word. The surrounding Yi word gives its meaning.

How did Yi writing develop?

It developed through regional traditions and later standardization. The oldest examples do not settle one start date: 15th-century Chenghua bell inscriptions are among the oldest reliably dated Yi-script examples, while surviving paper texts date to around 1500.

Bimo priests—religious specialists in Yi communities—passed on traditional Yi writing for scripture, legends, history, medicine, and astrology. They wrote on paper, wood, bamboo, cloth, bone, horn, and stone. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980; it later appeared in textbooks, literature, and a newspaper.

The Liangshan standard is a syllabary—each sign represents a spoken syllable—for one dialect. Other Yi writing traditions remain distinct. Chinese, Tibetan, Burmese, and Dai writing traditions also share the wider region; their deeper historical links to Yi writing are unsettled.

Someone sent me ꀲ—what should I do?

Ask for the surrounding Yi text before translating it.

Alone, it signals Yi writing rather than a general emotional reaction. Ask the sender for the surrounding Yi words or a translation; “byt” labels the reading, not an English message.

Yi-language material, not a general reaction symbol; “byt” gives the reading, not the translation.

Without surrounding Yi words, you cannot reliably translate it.

Why is ꀲ a box?

Usually, the font lacks Yi coverage. The character data can still be intact; displaying it with a font that includes Yi glyphs can fix the box.
