yi syllable ciet

Yi syllable Ciet

691/1165

In standard Yi syllabary usage, ꊲ is a Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) syllable romanized ciet; by itself, it has no fixed English gloss. In a word, it contributes one syllable and the surrounding text supplies the meaning. The final t marks a high, level tone, not a separate consonant.

What ꊲ means

It is one Nuosu Yi syllable, not a standalone English word.

In Yi Pinyin, ciet is a pronunciation spelling: c represents an aspirated “ts” sound (like “ts” with an extra puff of air), ie an open e-like vowel, and final t marks a high, level tone rather than a consonant.

A Nuosu word is built from syllables. Since one syllable can represent different words depending on context, ꊲ alone does not identify which English word is meant.

How did the Liangshan Yi standard develop?

It grew from local Yi writing into a standard for Liangshan Nuosu.

Older Yi writing included many local forms rather than one shared standard. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, passed forms through lineages and used them for religious rites, healing, genealogy, history and literature.

A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is commonly cited as the earliest securely dated surviving example; claims for older inscriptions remain debated. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, drawing on traditional forms and Xide County speech. It created a phonetic syllabary for one dialect, to support consistent reading and teaching. Yi Pinyin is its companion romanization for teaching and dictionary lookup.

Why does ꊲ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
