yi syllable ddiep

Yi syllable ddiep

317/1165

ꄼ represents a Liangshan Yi syllable written ddiep in the standardized Latin transcription; the final p marks a low-falling tone. A single character does not give a full word translation—its Liangshan text supplies the meaning. Southern Yi/Nisu references give ddiep separate, dialect-specific glosses.

What ꄼ means

In standardized Liangshan Yi writing, ꄼ contributes one syllable to a word. The standardized Latin transcription is ddiep; its final p marks a low-falling tone, with the voice dropping during the syllable. The word or sentence supplies its lexical meaning.

The modern standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It drew on traditional Liangshan forms after regional writing proved too varied and did not represent modern pronunciation consistently. Its purpose was practical literacy and public writing.

What does ꄼ mean when someone sends it alone?

Alone, ꄼ has no universal chat reading. If the sender is writing Liangshan Yi, it may be part of a word; ask what text it belongs to before assigning a translation. A Southern Yi/Nisu dictionary gives ddiep different lexical glosses, so that entry cannot settle the meaning of a Liangshan message.

Is ꄼ a traditional Yi character?

It belongs to the modern Liangshan standard, not every Yi writing tradition. Reliable dated examples of traditional Yi writing include bell inscriptions from the 15th century; paper texts survive from around 1500. Earlier origin claims and inscriptions remain debated.

The standard selected and regularized traditional Liangshan forms. Traditional texts were transmitted by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, and included scripture, legends, history, medicine, and astrology. The standardized script later appeared in textbooks, literature, newspapers, elementary education, and practical work materials; other Yi regions have distinct writing traditions.

In Liangshan Yi text, ꄼ is a written syllable; alone, it has no complete translation.

Without Yi or surrounding words, do not assign it one fixed translation.

Questions people ask

3

Why does ꄼ show as a square?

The active font probably lacks this glyph. Unicode support and font coverage are separate; use a font that includes standardized Yi syllables.

Can ꄼ be used for every Yi dialect?

No. This standardized set is for Liangshan Yi. Other Yi regions have distinct writing traditions and phonetic systems, so ꄼ is not a universal Yi spelling.

Does ddiep mean flat land?

It can in a different tradition. An undated Southern Yi/Nisu dictionary lists ddiep as “level ground” or “open space”; in Nasu speech it can also mean a body's back or a ridge. Those are dialect-specific glosses, not universal translations of Liangshan ꄼ.
