yi syllable diep

Yi syllable Diep

ꄆ is a syllable sign in standardized Liangshan Yi writing, not a character with a fixed standalone word meaning. In a Nuosu text—the Liangshan variety—it represents the syllable romanized as “diep”; the surrounding Yi word supplies the meaning. The standard grew out of older, regionally varied Yi writing traditions.

What ꄆ means

Usually no: it marks a syllable, not a standalone translation.

In standardized Liangshan Yi—the variety called Nuosu—ꄆ marks a syllable in the writing system. “Diep” is its Latin-letter spelling, not a word translation; the surrounding Yi word supplies the meaning.

That reading applies to the Liangshan standard. Yi writing traditions in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and nearby regions have used different forms, syllable inventories, and readings, so this exact sign may not carry over unchanged.

How did Yi writing become standardized?

The earliest reliably dated surviving Yi evidence includes inscriptions on Guizhou bells from the Chenghua period in the fifteenth century; most surviving paper works are estimated to date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Before standardization, bimo—Yi ritual specialists—passed local writing across generations. They used it for religious, magical, medical, and family-line records; surviving literature also includes legends, history, medicine, and astrology. Some older signs were ideographic: they represented words or ideas rather than one syllable’s sound. Historical records use “Cuan script” for some earlier material; that label alone does not establish that Yi writing descended from Chinese characters.

The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. China adopted a national Yi script standard in 1991 as the basis for Unicode encoding. It set out syllable-by-syllable writing for Liangshan Yi, not one universal script for every Yi variety.

Language-specific and technical; its reading depends on the Yi writing system.

“Diep” is the Latin-letter spelling of a syllable, not a word translation.
