What ꄘ means
In Liangshan Yi, ꄘ writes the syllable durx. In the standard Latin-letter spelling, final x marks the syllable's tone; durx gives a reading, not an English translation. Its word sense depends on the surrounding Yi text.
Older Yi writing varied by locality. Village priests used it for religious, magical and medical texts, as well as family histories. The earliest surviving example identified as Yi is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485; some older inscriptions have also been proposed as Yi, but their attribution remains unsettled.
The Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for one Yi dialect. Traditional Yi signs appear to have developed independently of Han ideographs; the standardized syllabary selected forms from local Yi writing traditions.
How do I type durx?
Use a Yi input method that accepts Latin-letter spellings. On Windows, enter durx in the Yi IME and choose ꄘ from its candidate list.
If it appears as a square, the active font lacks Yi coverage. A font with Yi Syllables support, such as Nuosu SIL, can draw it.
