Yi Syllable Fyp

226/1165

ꃡ is a Liangshan Yi syllable, not an emoji. A Nuosu list also marks it as expressive.

Text symbol

What ꃡ means

It writes one spoken syllable in Liangshan Yi.

In Liangshan spelling, final p in fyp marks a low-falling tone (the voice drops low). A 2022 Nuosu list calls ꃡ a “mimetic word”—an expressive word evoking sound or action—but gives no plain gloss.

Older Yi writing varied regionally; Bimo (Yi ritual specialists) passed down ritual, history, medical, and astrology texts. The oldest reliably dated surviving inscription is a Guizhou bronze bell from 1485. The Liangshan standard, devised in 1974 and official in 1980, reshaped that tradition into one sign per spoken syllable for literacy and practical texts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꃡ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
