yi syllable giet

Yi syllable giet

479/1165

ꇞ represents one Yi syllable, spelled giet in Yi Pinyin. Read it as part of a Nuosu Yi word: alone, it has no dependable message meaning. The modern Liangshan standard grew from older regional writing traditions.

What ꇞ means

ꇞ marks one syllable in the Liangshan Yi script.

The Liangshan Yi writing system is used for Nuosu. The meaning comes from the Yi word and sentence around ꇞ, so the syllable alone has no reliable translation.

Older Yi writing varied regionally in signs, sounds, direction and punctuation. The Liangshan syllabary grew from these traditions, sometimes called Cuan or bimo script; bimo are Yi ritual specialists who hand-copied and transmitted texts. Links to lost Qiangic writing or Shang oracle bones remain theories. Some Yi inscriptions are attributed to the Western Han (206 BCE–AD 9); surviving paper texts date to around 1500 or earlier. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980. Yi texts cover rituals, funerals, genealogy, history, medicine, poetry and divination. As of 2024, Sichuan Yi appeared in newspapers, schools, novels and video subtitles.

How do I type ꇞ?

A Yi Pinyin keyboard can turn giet into the Yi character.

In Yi Pinyin, the final t marks high tone—the syllable’s pitch. It belongs to the Latin spelling giet, not to ꇞ itself.

If your keyboard offers no Yi choices, use a Nuosu/Yi keyboard or character viewer and search U+A1DE. Plain Latin giet is not ꇞ.

Why is ꇞ a box?

A square usually means the font or app lacks Yi coverage.

The square is a fallback display for a text character your font or app cannot show. The standard script runs left to right, and its characters do not join to change shape. Older regional forms could run in other directions and used variant shapes, so a handwritten form resembling ꇞ is not necessarily the same encoded character.

Neutral in Yi text; outside it, the character alone gives no reliable clue to a message’s meaning.

Do not assign it a standalone translation; the Yi word around it supplies the meaning.

Why does ꇞ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
