yi syllable gox

Yi syllable Gox

492/1165

ꇫ is a Yi character that spells one syllable in standardized Liangshan (Nuosu) Yi writing; “gox” labels that syllable and its tone, not a translation. In a word, nearby syllables and context supply its meaning.

What ꇫ means

It spells one syllable; the surrounding word supplies its meaning. In the standardized Liangshan (Nuosu) system, “gox” is the Latin-letter spelling used to label the syllable, not an English translation. Its final x marks the secondary-high tone, a distinction in pitch.

On its own, ꇫ gives you a syllable but too little context to identify the word. Read it as one part of Yi writing, with the surrounding text supplying the rest.

How did Yi writing change?

The modern standard grew from older Yi writing traditions. The oldest surviving dated evidence is a Yi-and-Chinese inscription on a bronze bell from 1485; earlier manuscripts may be older, but many traditional texts are undated and the script’s exact origin is debated.

Traditional Yi writing preserved scripture, legends, history, medicine, astrology, and ritual knowledge, with priests maintaining texts within their communities. The standardized Liangshan syllabary—a system in which each character represents a syllable—was devised in 1974 and formally promulgated in 1980 for literacy and practical education.

The modern syllabary descends from older Yi ideographs, signs that represented ideas, rather than from Han Chinese characters.

Which Yi keyboard can enter ꇫ?

On Windows, use the Yi input method and select a candidate. Enter the syllable’s romanized phoneme spelling, “gox,” then choose ꇫ from the candidate list.

In Yi text, ꇫ spells one syllable; alone, it is hard to interpret without its word.

“Gox” labels the syllable and its tone; it is not a translation.

Why does ꇫ look different in fonts?

It can. Fonts draw the glyph, and a font without Yi coverage may show a substitute or a missing-glyph mark.

Does Yi script work for every Yi dialect?

No. The standardized Liangshan syllabary is intended for the Liangshan dialect; other Yi varieties may use different traditional or regional forms.
