Yi syllable Hlie

413/1165

ꆜ is the Yi syllable hlie in standardized Liangshan writing; “hlie” is its Latin-letter reading, not a standalone translation. Its meaning comes from the surrounding word in Nuosu, the Yi language of Liangshan. Older Yi writing varied by region and served ritual and practical purposes.

What ꆜ means

It writes one Yi syllable; the surrounding word supplies the meaning.

The standardized Liangshan system writes Nuosu, the Yi language of that region. Here, “hlie” is the Latin-letter transcription of the syllable, not a standalone translation; translate the surrounding word or sentence.

The earliest securely dated surviving Yi evidence is the 1485 Chenghua Bell inscription; it marks a surviving record, not the script’s beginning.

Why did people write Yi?

Traditional texts preserved ritual knowledge and practical learning.

Traditional Yi writing was chiefly maintained by bimo, hereditary ritual specialists. They copied texts about ritual and magical practice, medicine, genealogy (family lineages), legends, and astrology. These manuscripts served specialist settings, while the later standard also supported general schooling.

The Liangshan standard selected older regional signs for a syllable-based writing system. It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy; it supported schools, official documents, newspapers, and literary editions of older works. It represents the Nuosu variety used in Liangshan, not every Yi language or regional tradition.

Is ꆜ a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to standardized Yi writing used in Liangshan.

Traditional Yi signs that represented ideas do not appear to descend from Chinese characters, though the writing traditions developed alongside each other. The Liangshan standard also adopted Chinese-style punctuation and left-to-right layout; those shared conventions do not make ꆜ a Chinese character.

The standard drew on older Yi forms from the north of the region, while other areas kept distinct traditions. A ritual manuscript and a school text may therefore use different forms and serve different readers.
