What ꆤ means

ꆤ writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. Its standard Latin-letter spelling is hluop. The final p marks a low falling tone; it is not a final English p sound.

In this standard, characters record syllables, and a word's meaning comes from its full sequence. Older Yi writing traditions also include signs used for ideas and regional forms, so the Liangshan standard is not a universal Yi spelling system.

How old is Yi writing?

Yi writing predates its modern standardized form by centuries. The earliest securely dated surviving inscription is on a bronze bell from Guizhou, dated 1485.

Yi writing served practical and ritual purposes. Bimo, Yi religious specialists, used written texts to preserve sacred writings, stories, histories, genealogies, medicine, astrology, and ritual knowledge, passing them through generations. The historical label Cuan script refers to related regional Yi writing and administrative traditions.

The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and publishing. It drew on older Northern Yi forms but represented the Liangshan dialect; other Yi communities have regional forms with different shapes and sound values.

What does ꆤ mean alone?

Alone, ꆤ gives one Yi syllable without a word to translate. A lone message may be Yi text or a font test, but the character itself does not reveal a joke, greeting, or mood.

Someone familiar with another Yi writing tradition may not read this form the same way: the standardized system is specific to Liangshan Yi. The surrounding word or sentence supplies the context.

Neutral in standardized Liangshan Yi writing; opaque alone to readers who do not know that system.

Without more text, do not infer a greeting or mood.
