Yi Syllable Hlurx

432/1165

ꆯ is a Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) syllable; “hlurx” is its Latin spelling. Yi text gives meaning; boxes usually signal missing font support.

Text symbol

What ꆯ means

It records one spoken syllable in Liangshan Yi.

“Hlurx” is Yi Pinyin’s Latin-letter spelling; final x marks the secondary high tone, not an x sound.

Traditional Yi writing, called Cuan or Wei, varied regionally; village priests passed down religious, magical, medical, genealogical and literary texts in it. Its word signs followed Chinese writing principles but seem not to derive from Han characters. The oldest surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485. One tradition credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty. The Liangshan standard adapted older forms: devised in 1974, promulgated in 1980, it supported literacy in that dialect.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꆯ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
