What ꂗ means

It is a syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script. Yi Pinyin is a Latin-letter spelling system for Yi: in hmiep, hm begins the syllable, ie is the vowel, and final p marks its low-falling tone, a pitch that falls as the syllable is spoken. The spelling guides pronunciation; the word meaning depends on how the syllable is used in Yi.

The oldest securely dated surviving example of Yi writing is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; that date establishes an early written example, not the origin of this standardized form. Older Yi writing traditions used ideographic signs and included religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts transmitted by village priests.

The modern Liangshan syllabary is a distinct, standardized form. It was devised in 1974 to improve literacy and officially promulgated in 1980. It later appeared in schools, newspapers, literature, and public signs.

Does this form belong to every Yi writing tradition?

No. ꂗ belongs to the standardized Liangshan/Nuosu form.

Older Yi writing traditions and other Yi-language communities do not all use the same script. Traditional forms vary in their symbols, shapes, orientation, and writing direction, so a character from this standard should not be assumed to work across them.

A language-specific syllable, read through the conventions of modern Liangshan Yi.
