What ꉸ means
Older Yi forms differ from the standardized Liangshan syllabary.
Nuosu tradition credits Aki with creating Yi writing. A bronze bell dated 1485 preserves an early example of older Yi forms. Some older forms used ideographic signs—symbols for ideas rather than syllables—in religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts used by bimo, Nuosu religious specialists.
The Liangshan syllabary, with one character per syllable, was devised in 1974 and adopted in 1980 to support literacy in one regional Yi dialect.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꉸ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
