What ꉍ means
It writes the Liangshan Yi syllable hxiep. In Liangshan romanization, final p in hxiep marks a low-falling tone. Older local Yi forms may use different readings.
The earliest surviving monumental evidence is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Yi writing preserved religious, medical, magical, and family-genealogy texts passed down by bimo, Yi ritual specialists. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to promote literacy, but it is not universal across Yi varieties.
