What ꉗ means
It writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. “Hxox” is a Latin-letter reading label, not an English translation; its final x marks secondary high tone, one of the pitch categories in the notation.
Read it with the surrounding Yi text to see which word it belongs to. This syllabary is for Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu; it does not cover every Yi language. Other Yi writing traditions in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi have different glyph shapes, inventories, and readings.
Why did people use Yi writing?
It carried local texts and later supported literacy. Accounts differ about the earliest surviving evidence: they mention inscriptions from the 13th century, a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485, and paper or sheepskin texts around 1500. These are surviving examples, not a settled date of origin.
Traditional Yi writing was maintained by village ritual specialists. Their manuscripts include religious and magical texts, healing, genealogies, scriptures, legends, history, and astrology. This local stewardship helps explain the many regional forms.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. Its phonetic syllabary was used in literacy and practical textbooks, including rural and adult-arithmetic materials. It is a regional standard connected to older Yi traditions, not one encoding for every earlier Yi manuscript.
Use it for Liangshan Yi writing; it is not a general-purpose chat reaction.
