What ꏦ means
ꏦ is one syllable in the Yi script used to write Nuosu. In the Liangshan standard, its romanized spelling is “jie”; the character marks a syllable, and surrounding Nuosu text supplies its role in a word or passage.
The script has a long, regionally varied history. A Yi-and-Chinese inscription survives on a bronze bell dated 1485; undated manuscripts and earlier claimed objects point to a longer tradition. Bimo, ritual specialists, traditionally copied and recited ritual, medical, historical, and astrological texts.
The Liangshan standard was developed in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. Built from older Northern Yi forms, it brought standardized Yi writing into literacy teaching, newspapers, official documents, and literature. The Yi script is distinct from Chinese characters and has a regional history alongside neighboring writing traditions such as Tibetan.
A written Yi syllable; its role depends on the Nuosu word or passage around it.
Without Nuosu context, a single ꏦ does not reveal the intended word.
