yi syllable jjiet

Yi Syllable Jjiet

1053/1165

In Nuosu, one Yi language, ꐜ writes the syllable jjiet. A Nuosu word list glosses a word containing it as “suffer loss”; surrounding syllables and the sentence set the full translation. The character belongs to an older Yi writing tradition that included regional ritual and family-history texts.

What ꐜ means

The word-list gloss belongs to a word, not every use.

One Nuosu Yi word list gives a word written with ꐜ the gloss “suffer loss.” Nuosu is one Yi language. In standard Liangshan romanization—a system for spelling syllables with Latin letters—this syllable is written jjiet; its final t marks a high, steady pitch.

When someone sends ꐜ alone, you can identify written language but not the intended word or reason for sending it. The surrounding message supplies that context.

How old is Yi writing?

Yi writing has older regional forms; the Liangshan standard came later.

Traditional Yi writing varied by region and was passed along local teacher-to-student lines. Bimo, Yi religious specialists, used it for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. A bronze bell inscription dated 1485 is among the earliest surviving Yi examples; it dates a surviving example, not the start of the tradition.

In 1974, a standardized Liangshan syllabary—a system with a sign for each written syllable—was devised from regional Yi traditions. It grew from that writing, adopted Chinese punctuation, and set a shared left-to-right direction where local practice had varied.

How do I type ꐜ on Windows?

Use Windows’ Yi input method, then select the matching candidate.

Microsoft’s Windows Yi input guide, updated 2024-06-20, describes adding Yi input, entering the romanized syllable jjiet on a regular keyboard, and selecting the matching character from the candidates. Press Windows logo key Spacebar to switch input layouts.

If ꐜ appears as a box, the active font lacks Yi coverage; an installed Yi-capable font can render it.

In Nuosu writing, it is ordinary text; by itself, it gives too little context to infer the sender’s tone.
