yi syllable kie

Yi syllable kie

510/1165

ꇽ is a Nuosu Yi syllable, named kie and pronounced approximately khɛ33: an aspirated k followed by the vowel in bed, at a steady mid pitch. A Nuosu dictionary glosses it “chop; cut into lengths,” but its word meaning depends on the surrounding syllables. Yi writing moved from regional manuscripts to a standardized Liangshan script.

What ꇽ means

It writes a Nuosu syllable; its word meaning depends on context. Nuosu is a Yi language. A dictionary glosses ꇽ as “cut into lengths; chop firewood or a tree”; that is a word-level translation, not a universal meaning for the isolated character.

Kie is the romanized name of the syllable. Its pronunciation is transcribed khɛ33: roughly an aspirated k followed by the vowel in bed. The number 33 marks a steady mid tone.

How did Yi writing develop?

It grew through regional traditions before a modern Liangshan standard. Traditional Yi forms varied by region. A bronze-bell inscription is dated to 1485. Histories also discuss proposed Guizhou objects dated to 206 BC–AD 9 and AD 223–37; those dates remain uncertain.

Village ritual specialists used traditional Yi writing for religious, magical, medical, and family-history manuscripts. A Latin-letter scheme appeared in 1956; the standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980.

A 2022 study of Xichang found Nuosu beside Chinese on public signs and documents; it could mark Yi identity even for viewers who could not read it. Cuan and Wei are historical names for Yi peoples and traditions, not readings of ꇽ. Traditional Yi ideographs appear to have developed independently of Chinese Han characters.

Why can ꇽ appear as a box?

A font without Yi Syllables coverage cannot draw it. If the character appears as a box, the font lacks this glyph; the text still contains ꇽ.

Neutral in Nuosu writing; outside a Nuosu sentence, specialist or unexplained.

A lone ꇽ does not reliably mean “chop”; that gloss depends on its word.

Does a box mean ꇽ changed?

No. The box means the current font cannot draw the character; it does not change the underlying text.
