What ꈏ means

ꈏ represents one spoken syllable. In the Latin transcription kux, final x marks a secondary-high tone—a pitch distinction.

Yi writing predates this standard: the earliest securely dated surviving inscriptions are from the 15th century; older development remains debated. Village priests used older Yi writing for religious, magical, healing, and family-history texts.

Designed in 1974 and adopted in 1980, the modern syllabary writes Nuosu, the Liangshan Yi variety. It does not cover every Yi variety and was not derived from Chinese characters.
