What ꇘ means
ꇘ represents one Yi syllable; the Yi word around it supplies the translation.
Yi Pinyin is a Latin-letter spelling system: lyrx represents the syllable, and final x marks secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern. ꇘ is a Yi-script character, not an emoji.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It grew from older Yi writing traditions rather than the Han Chinese character system. Bimo ritual specialists used older writing for religious, medical, magical, and family-lineage texts; the standard later appeared in textbooks, newspapers, and public notices. The oldest securely dated Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485; that date belongs to Yi writing generally, not ꇘ.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꇘ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
