yi syllable nbup

Yi syllable nbup

For ordinary text, use an input method with Yi support; for source code, use a Unicode escape. ꂈ is the Nuosu Yi syllable romanized as <i>nbup</i>, a syllable sound whose word meaning comes from context. The standardized Liangshan form grew from older, locally varied Yi writing.

What ꂈ means

Use a Yi-capable input method; code can use Unicode escapes.

For ordinary text, use an input method that supports Nuosu Yi or system Unicode entry for A088. In HTML/XML, write ꂈ; CSS accepts \A088 , JavaScript \u{A088}, and JSON \uA088.

If it appears as a box, your font lacks Yi coverage. A different Yi font may draw it differently, but the underlying character stays the same.

What does ꂈ mean?

It represents the Nuosu Yi syllable romanized as nbup.

In Liangshan romanization, the final p marks a low-falling tone: the voice starts low and drops. It names a syllable sound, not a complete word; translate it from the surrounding Yi word or sentence.

Traditional Yi writing varied by region. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used those scripts in religious, magical, and medical manuscripts. The earliest securely dated surviving Yi-script example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. The standardized Liangshan syllabary grew from those traditions; it was developed in 1974 and made official in 1980 for literacy and public texts. It covers Liangshan Yi only, not every Yi dialect.

What if someone sends only ꂈ?

Treat it as one syllable, not a complete message.

Alone, ꂈ identifies the reading nbup but cannot identify a whole word. Use the surrounding Yi sentence to interpret it.

An older manuscript may use a local Yi form that differs from the standardized Liangshan character.

Neutral inside standardized Liangshan Yi writing; opaque alone unless you read the language.

A lone syllable does not reveal the whole word.

Why does ꂈ show as a box?

Your font lacks Yi coverage. A Yi-capable font can render it; the box marks a missing glyph, not another syllable.

Can ꂈ represent every Yi dialect?

No. The standardized syllabary is for Liangshan Yi; other Yi traditions use different forms that may not map one-to-one to it.
