What ꂏ means
It represents a spoken syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi writing.
The sign belongs to the Liangshan dialect; its meaning depends on the Yi word or sentence around it. The spelling nbyrx identifies the syllable; its final x marks tone, not an extra consonant to pronounce.
How did the Liangshan Yi syllabary develop?
It reshaped older, local Yi writing into a standard for one dialect.
Traditional Yi writing—historically called Cuan or Wei—was not a single uniform script. Its local signs were ideographic: many represented ideas or words rather than only syllables. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, passed down religious, medical, magical, and genealogical texts. Although the writing system developed in a Chinese-influenced setting, traditional Yi signs do not appear to derive directly from Chinese characters.
An origin tradition credits a figure named Aki with devising the script during the Tang dynasty. Some scholars identify older marks on pottery, bronze, and stone as Yi writing, but that identification is debated; the Unicode Standard names an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485 as the earliest surviving example.
To improve literacy, a Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956. The standardized script based on older Liangshan forms was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980; it was made for that dialect alone, not every Yi language or local script.

Questions people ask
2Why does ꂏ show as a box?
Most likely, the active font has no glyph for ꂏ. The app may show a missing-character box or question mark; a font with Yi coverage can display it.
Can all Yi dialects use the standardized script?
No. This standard was designed for the Liangshan dialect alone. Other Yi communities may use different local speech varieties and writing traditions.
