What ꅔ means
It writes one syllable in Liangshan Yi. Yi Pinyin is the system that spells Yi syllables with Latin letters; here it writes ndip, pronounced roughly like “n-dee” with a low-falling tone. The final p marks that tone, not a separate p sound. This is a pronunciation guide, not an English translation, so ꅔ has no standalone English or chat meaning.
Yi writing has regional traditions. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used it for religious and magical rites, medical texts, and family histories. A bilingual bronze bell inscription dated 1485 is the earliest surviving dated monument; paper and sheepskin manuscripts survive from around 1500. The script's origins remain debated.
The classical Yi script is a syllabary in its own right, not a set of Chinese characters. The standardized Liangshan Yi syllabary was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy with a shared phonetic system, drawing on Northern Yi traditions. Cuan and Wei are historical names for parts of wider Yi writing, not for this syllable.
How do I type ꅔ?
Use Yi Pinyin in an input method for Yi. Enter ndip, select the matching Yi character, then confirm with Enter or Space. A regular keyboard leaves ndip as Latin letters; without a Yi input method, those letters do not become ꅔ.
