yi syllable njuox

Yi syllable Njuox

1082/1165

ꐹ is one syllable in the Liangshan Yi script; its Yi Pinyin spelling is njuox, not a complete word or message. Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) writing strings syllables together to form words and sentences. In Yi Pinyin, the final x marks tone—the syllable’s pitch pattern—not a separate x sound.

What ꐹ means

It marks one Yi syllable, not a whole word. The Latin spelling njuox is the Yi Pinyin form for this syllable, used for learning and input. Its final x marks tone—the syllable’s pitch pattern—rather than a separate consonant. Nearby syllables show which word it belongs to.

Traditional Yi writing carried religious, magical, medical, and family-history material, often passed down by village ritual specialists—people who led ceremonies and preserved ritual texts. It was a way to write Yi, not a stand-alone pictorial message.

How did Yi writing change?

Its forms and audience changed over time. Old Yi writing traditions varied in their signs, page orientation, and writing direction. The earliest surviving Yi writing example recorded for the tradition is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485. Earlier stone and bronze examples have been proposed, so that inscription shows use by then, not a proven origin.

The Liangshan Yi standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It brought schooling, newspapers, and older texts into a shared written form. The standard selected and regularized older Yi forms, but that does not make each modern syllable a one-to-one match for an older sign. Traditional Yi characters form a writing system independent of Chinese Han characters; this standard serves Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.

In Liangshan Yi writing it is ordinary text; outside that context it may look like unfamiliar script.

A lone ꐹ is too little to translate; ask for the Yi word or a translation.
