What ꑁ means
It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable, romanized as njup. Here, “njup” is the Latin-letter spelling used to identify the syllable, not an English word to translate. The surrounding Yi text supplies any larger word or phrase context.
The earliest securely dated surviving evidence for the wider Yi script is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485. Earlier objects have been identified as Yi by some scholars, but those readings remain debated. This dates the wider tradition, not this exact standardized glyph. Traditional forms varied by region, shape, and writing direction.
Older Yi traditions, called Cuan or Wei in some historical sources, were used by bimo priests—religious specialists—for religious, healing, genealogical, magical, and literary texts. The Liangshan standard selected forms from those local traditions to build a syllabary. It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It is designed for Liangshan Yi, not every Yi language. Unicode describes older Yi signs as apparently independent of Han Chinese characters.
What does ꑁ mean when someone sends it?
Check whether it is Yi text or a mention of the character.
In a Liangshan Yi sentence, read it with the surrounding text. In a script, translation, or font discussion, it is usually being identified or demonstrated. If it arrives alone in an English message, ask which Yi text or word it came from; the isolated syllable does not reveal the sender’s intended message.
How do I type ꑁ?
Use a Yi keyboard or hexadecimal Unicode input. A keyboard that includes the Yi Syllables range can enter it. If your editor accepts hexadecimal Unicode input, enter UA441.
The keyboard supplies input; a compatible font supplies the glyph’s display.
Literal in Liangshan Yi writing; context-dependent when shown alone to readers outside the language.
An isolated ꑁ does not reveal the sender’s intended message; ask what text it came from.
Drift: In 2024, research on Nuosu digital literacy found writing use centered on literary and artistic expression, and on teaching and learning the script, rather than interpersonal messaging. This describes that study, not every user.

Questions people ask
2Why does ꑁ show as a box?
It can when the active font lacks a Yi glyph. Use a font with the standardized Yi set, such as Nuosu SIL, then check the text again.
Can I use ꑁ in any Yi language?
Not reliably. The standardized set is designed for Liangshan Yi; other Yi writing traditions can differ in glyph shape and phonetic value. Check the language and spelling before substituting it.
