What ꎦ means

Context decides which word this Yi syllable represents.

Yi Pinyin is the standard Latin-letter spelling for Nuosu; it writes this syllable as nryx. The final x marks a mid-high tone, not an extra sound.

A written syllable can correspond to different words, so this character by itself has no dependable English gloss.

How did the Yi script develop?

It grew through local Yi traditions before a modern standard was set. Traditional Yi writing was preserved in local lineages, especially by bimo (Yi priests), for religious and magical rites and for medical, genealogical, and historical texts. Different communities transmitted different written forms and readings rather than one public standard.

An inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485 is among the earliest surviving dated examples of Yi writing. It shows that Yi writing was in use by then, without fixing when it began.

The modern Nuosu standard for the Liangshan region was devised in 1974 and officially adopted in 1980. It selected traditional forms for a syllabary used in education and publishing; ꎦ belongs to this standard. Traditional Yi writing is structurally independent of Chinese-character writing. Naxi and Shui are neighboring southwestern writing traditions, not alternate forms of ꎦ.

A standard written syllable in Nuosu; unfamiliar and context-dependent outside that language.

Sent alone, it may read as an unexplained character rather than a message.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꎦ show as a box?

It can be a font-coverage problem: the text may be encoded correctly while the active font lacks Yi glyphs. As of 2026, Nuosu SIL documents a font covering the full Yi syllable set.
