What ꋯ means

It is the Yi syllable nzi; its word gives it meaning.

Here, nzi is a Latin-letter spelling used to identify the syllable, not an English translation. ꋯ represents a spoken syllable in Yi writing; its place and meaning come from the Yi word or sentence around it.

Many traditional Yi manuscripts—on religion, ritual, medicine, and family history—were kept within village lineages of religious specialists. Modern standardization brought a common form into wider literacy, education, and public writing.

Where did the Yi script come from?

It grew through regional traditions before the modern standard.

The earliest dated Yi script example that survives is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Many manuscripts have no date, so this inscription marks a documented point in the script's history, not necessarily its beginning.

Traditional Yi writing and modern Liangshan Yi differ in standardization. The traditional script developed separately from Chinese characters, though some punctuation was borrowed from Chinese writing. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It organized selected northern Liangshan forms into a syllabary for the Nuosu language, with one written character for each syllable. It differs from locally variable traditional forms and other regional Yi standards.

Why does ꋯ show as a box?

A missing Yi glyph in the font causes the box.

A box or blank means the chosen font cannot draw this Yi character. Fonts such as Noto Sans Yi and Nuosu SIL include Yi Syllables; the display changes when the font has no matching glyph.

Yi Pinyin serves teaching, pronunciation, dictionary lookup, and typing. Its final t, p, or x can mark tone; for this syllable, nzi has no final tone letter, and that omission is intentional.

Neutral in Yi writing; outside Yi-language text, it reads as an unexplained syllable from a particular script.

Why does ꋯ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
