yi syllable qox

Yi syllable qox

1034/1165

ꐉ is the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized qox. It contributes a syllable to Yi text, while the surrounding words carry the translation; alone in a chat, it has no dependable English meaning. The modern Liangshan standard grew from older Yi writing traditions and was developed for public literacy.

What ꐉ means

ꐉ represents the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized qox.

Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu, is the Yi variety written in this standard. In its romanization, final x marks the secondary-high tone. The word containing ꐉ gets its translation from the surrounding Yi text.

A modern standard grew from older Yi writing

A 1485 bronze-bell inscription is the earliest securely dated surviving example cited for the wider Yi writing tradition; it does not date ꐉ itself. Traditional Yi ideographic signs—written signs for words or ideas—are understood as independent of Han characters, not derived from them.

Bimo, Yi ritual specialists and priests, used manuscripts for scripture, ritual, medicine, genealogy, history, and astrology. The standardized Liangshan script was devised in 1974 and formally promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy; it then appeared in textbooks, literature, and newspapers.

The change moved writing from localized priestly transmission toward public education and cultural preservation. ꐉ belongs to the Liangshan standard; it does not make every Yi variety write identically.

What does it mean when someone sends ꐉ?

By itself, it carries no dependable translation or chat reaction.

Inside a Yi word or sentence, it contributes its syllable to the text. If someone sends it alone, ask for the sentence or source it came from; the glyph by itself does not tell you what they meant.

Neutral within Yi writing; outside it, specialized text rather than a chat reaction.

A lone syllable will not tell a non-Yi reader what sentence you meant.

Why does ꐉ show as a box?

A font without Yi-script coverage may show a missing-glyph box or another fallback instead of the character's shape. The text still contains ꐉ; changing fonts changes its appearance, not the character.
