yi syllable rryrx

Yi syllable rryrx

915/1165

ꎒ is one written syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu). In a Yi message, read it with the surrounding text; rryrx is the Yi Pinyin label for its sound and tone. The modern one-character-per-syllable system grew from older Yi writing traditions that varied by region and lineage.

Text symbol

What ꎒ means

It represents one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi writing. In Yi Pinyin, rryrx is its romanized label; the final x marks the secondary-high tone, a particular pitch level in Yi speech.

Yi writing has a long, varied history. Some accounts describe claimed inscriptions on pottery, stone, and bronze from more than 1,000 years ago; a surviving bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is among the earliest examples cited. Neither establishes that this standardized form appeared unchanged in those objects.

Why was Liangshan Yi standardized?

It was standardized to improve literacy in the Liangshan Yi dialect.

Before standardization, Yi writing was passed down through bimo lineages—bimo are Yi ritual specialists—and appeared in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Local traditions differed in glyphs, syllable inventories, pronunciations, and writing direction.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980. Other Yi traditions in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi use different character sets and writing directions, so this standard is not a system for every Yi language.

How do I type ꎒ?

The Windows Yi IME accepts phoneme input from ordinary keys and offers Yi-character candidates. Enter the Yi Pinyin spelling rryrx, select the matching syllable, and confirm; the spelling bridges lookup and input.

Font support is separate from typing. A font such as Nuosu SIL includes standardized Yi syllables; without a supporting font, a missing-glyph box or fallback shape may appear. Adjacent Yi characters remain independent text characters, with no typographic interaction.

In Yi-language text, it is a syllabic character; outside that context, readers unfamiliar with Yi may find it opaque.

Without Yi context, a recipient who does not read the script may not know what it says.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꎒ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
