Yi syllable ssyp

836/1165

What ꍃ means

One Yi syllable; context supplies its word-level reading.

The Yi syllable ssyp is one part of a word or phrase. By itself, ꍃ does not have a reliable one-word English translation; read it with its neighbors in Liangshan Yi text.

Why does ssyp end in p?

The final p marks tone in Yi Pinyin.

Yi Pinyin is a Latin-letter way to write Yi syllables for lookup and input. In this standard, the final p marks the low-falling tone; ssyp identifies pronunciation, not a translation.

How did the Yi script change?

The Liangshan standard was built from older Yi writing traditions.

The history is layered, not a single invention. A University of Washington history reports claimed Guizhou inscriptions from the Western Han period; Unicode cites a bronze bell dated 1485 as the earliest surviving monumental example. Traditional Yi writing varied locally and was used especially by village priests for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.

A Liangshan standard was devised in 1974, used experimentally from 1975, and officially promulgated in 1980. It selected traditional forms and organized them as a syllabary, where each sign represents one spoken syllable. Its lineage is within Yi writing; Unicode says older Yi signs appear not to derive from Chinese Han characters. This standard represents Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.
