What ꄧ means
It writes one Nuosu syllable; surrounding text gives its context.
Nuosu is a Yi language. In its standardized Liangshan spelling, ꄧ writes the syllable tuo. By itself, the sign identifies a syllable, not a dependable English gloss; neighboring signs and words supply its meaning.
how to type ꄧ?
Enter tuo in Yi Pinyin, with no final tone letter.
t marks high pitch, x a secondary high pitch, no final letter a steady middle pitch, and p a falling pitch from low. The spelling tuo is Yi Pinyin, not a Chinese Pinyin approximation.
Standard Yi runs left to right and normally places syllable signs together without spaces. Use a Yi-aware input method or converter; a Chinese Pinyin keyboard does not index this syllabary.
how does old yi script differ from modern yi script?
Modern Liangshan Yi is standardized; older Yi traditions vary by region.
Aki is a traditional attribution, not a settled inventor. As of 2026-09-12, the wider Yi script's origin and inventor remain unsettled. A Yi inscription on a bronze bell from 1485 is the earliest securely dated surviving example noted for the script; proposed older objects and undated manuscripts leave its earlier history debated.
Traditional Yi writing was kept by village ritual specialists for religious, magical, medical, and family-lineage texts. Local forms vary in shape, sign inventory, and direction. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. A 2024 Unicode proposal lists contemporary Sichuan Yi use in religion, books, newspapers, education, fiction, public signs, and subtitles. Historically, Cuan and Wei are labels for related traditions. This standardized Yi script is not universal across Yi communities and is not derived from Chinese characters or neighboring Tibetan, Burmese, or Tai writing systems.
