What ꃲ means
ꃲ is a Yi syllable, romanized as vex in the Liangshan standard. The final x marks tone in that spelling; vex is a reading label, not an English translation. Read the Yi word and surrounding text for its meaning.
Yi writing has varied regional traditions. The oldest securely dated surviving example cited for Yi writing is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485; the connection of proposed earlier objects to Yi writing remains disputed. Regional traditions, also known as Cuan and Wei, were used by bimo—Yi ritual specialists—for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The modern Liangshan standard, based on older Northern Yi forms, was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and publishing. It is for Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.
A written Yi syllable, not a standalone conversational reaction.
“vex” is a Liangshan Yi romanization, not the English verb “to annoy.”
