yi syllable xuox

Yi syllable Xuox

1126/1165

ꑥ is one written syllable in standard Nuosu Yi, so on its own it does not make a complete word or message. The spelling xuox marks one syllable; this writing tradition served ritual texts before the Liangshan standard carried it into books, newspapers, and public writing.

What ꑥ means

It is one Nuosu Yi syllable, not a complete word.

The standard Latin spelling is xuox: its first x represents a consonant, and its final x marks tone, the pitch pattern of the syllable. It is one syllable, not “xuo” followed by another sound; its word meaning comes from the Yi text around it.

How does ꑥ fit Yi writing history?

It belongs to a modern standard built from older regional scripts.

Nuosu tradition includes an Aki creation story. A surviving Yi inscription on a bronze bell is dated 1485. Some scholars interpret pottery, stone, and bronze inscriptions as Yi writing more than 1,000 years old; these proposed dates concern different kinds of evidence.

Paper Yi texts survive from at least the late Ming dynasty, a Chinese imperial dynasty. Bimo, Nuosu ritual specialists, copied texts within lineages and used writing for ritual recitation, genealogies, origin stories, divination, and community rites.

In the 1970s, the Liangshan standard drew on traditional regional forms and the speech of Xide. It carried Yi writing into books, official documents, newspapers, and literary works. ꑥ belongs to that written system; those ritual uses describe Yi writing broadly, not a special meaning for this syllable.

What does ꑥ mean when someone sends it?

Alone, it cannot tell you what the sender means.

Inside a Yi sentence, it is ordinary written text and its contribution depends on its word. Sent alone, it may be a character sample or a fragment; look for the surrounding text before reading it as a complete message.

Neutral in a Nuosu Yi passage; the surrounding text supplies its word-level reading.

A lone ꑥ does not tell you whether the sender meant a word, a sample, or a fragment.

Why does ꑥ show as a box?

Your current font may lack Yi coverage. A missing-glyph box signals a display problem; it does not mean the underlying character has changed.
