What ꑬ means
In the standard, ꑬ writes a single syllable. Its Latin-letter form is xyx; the surrounding Yi word supplies the gloss, so the character alone does not give a complete English translation.
How did Yi writing develop?
Yi writing developed across regional traditions. The oldest reliably dated surviving evidence is a bell inscription from the Chenghua period, dated 1485; it shows the script existed by then, not when it began. In traditional Yi practice, bimo—Yi ritual specialists who served as priests—used writing for scripture, ceremonies, medicine, history, and astrology.
Older regional forms varied in shape, sound, and meaning; many classical texts used signs for meanings alongside alternate forms. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 as a syllable-based writing system for one Yi dialect. In modern Liangshan use, it appears in literacy, practical-life and arithmetic materials, adult education, and the Liangshan Daily newspaper.
Cuan wen is a Chinese administrative label applied to forms regarded as possible predecessors of later Yi scripts; that wording signals a proposed connection, not a proven direct line. The standardized set used in computing represents the Liangshan branch, not every regional Yi tradition.
Neutral within Liangshan Yi writing; opaque as a free-standing message.
Alone, it can look like a stray fragment; add Yi context or a gloss.
