What ꑲ means
It represents one spoken syllable, not a phrase. Its Yi Pinyin spelling is yix; the final x marks a secondary-high tone, one of Liangshan Yi's pitch categories. The spelling gives its sound and tone, not a fixed English gloss: context determines how the syllable functions in a Yi word.
Traditional Yi writing used ideographs—signs for ideas or words—and had no single shared standard. It was historically called Cuan or Wei. One origin story credits Aki with devising it during China's Tang dynasty (618–907), while the earliest surviving dated example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Local scripts varied in their signs and writing direction; village priests and ritual specialists called bimo passed texts down for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical use.
A Latin-letter spelling system for the Liangshan (Northern) Yi dialect was introduced in 1956; Yi Pinyin is its spelling system. To improve literacy, a standardized Liangshan form based on older Northern Yi writing was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It serves Liangshan Yi, whose speakers are known as Nuosu, not every Yi variety. Published writing includes official documents, newspapers, and literature; ꑲ is one syllable sign in that system.
It belongs in Liangshan Yi writing or a script sample; elsewhere it reads as a specialist text character.
The encoded syllabary represents Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.
