What ꍓ means
It represents one Liangshan Yi syllable. “Zhe” labels the character in romanized form; it does not give an English or Mandarin meaning. Read the surrounding Nuosu word or sentence to understand it in context.
When does Yi writing first appear?
The oldest surviving dated evidence is from 1485. It is a bronze bell inscription combining Yi and Chinese text; traditional accounts credit Aki with developing Yi writing. Local forms served bimo, Yi priests, in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It descends from Classical Yi, an older Yi writing tradition, rather than directly from Han characters, and represents the Liangshan dialect—not every Yi variety.
ꍓ is Yi text, and the font displaying it determines its outline.
“Zhe” labels a Yi syllable here; it is not a Mandarin translation.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꍓ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
