What ꍏ means

It records a Liangshan Yi syllable; context supplies its meaning.

The spelling zho follows standard Liangshan romanization. Tone means the pitch pattern of a spoken syllable: final t, p, and x mark high-level, low-falling, and secondary-high tones. With no ending, zho indicates a level mid pitch.

The history of Liangshan Yi writing is layered. Traditional local Yi forms were used by village priests for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. A bronze bell dated 1485 is among the earliest surviving Yi inscriptions, though the script's beginnings remain uncertain. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980; it is used in textbooks, newspapers, official documents, and literature.

Why does ꍏ disappear on some screens?

A missing box usually means the selected font lacks a Yi glyph.

The character's code point does not include an image. An app asks its font for a glyph; if neither that font nor its fallback includes Yi, you may see a box or blank space. Use a font with Yi coverage or view the text in an app with font fallback.

Yi text normally runs from left to right, and adjacent syllable signs do not join or change shape.

Use ꍏ in Yi text, language examples, or a test of Yi input and font support.

Questions people ask

1

Is ꍏ a Chinese character?

No. It is a syllable sign in the standardized Liangshan Yi script, not a Chinese character. Yi dictionaries use a lookup system modeled on Chinese radicals, the component labels used to arrange dictionary entries; that does not make Yi syllable signs Chinese characters or establish that they descend from them.
