yi syllable zot

Yi Syllable Zot

668/1165

ꊛ writes a Nuosu syllable, represented as zot in the Liangshan standard; its meaning comes from the surrounding word. Yi Pinyin marks its high tone with the final t, and a Yi input method can use that spelling to find the matching character. The modern Liangshan standard belongs to a much older, regionally varied Yi writing tradition.

What ꊛ means

It writes one Nuosu syllable in the Liangshan standard.

Yi Pinyin writes its standard reading as zot; the final t marks high tone rather than a final consonant. The syllable's meaning comes from the Nuosu word or sentence around it.

How did Yi writing develop?

A later Nuosu tradition credits Aki with creating the script. The earliest commonly cited dated example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; it shows the script was in use by then, not when it began.

Traditional Yi writing varied by region and often used ideographic signs: characters representing words or ideas rather than one syllable each. Village priests used it for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. The traditional ideographs do not appear to derive from Han Chinese characters; neighboring Tibetan, Burmese, and Tai scripts are separate systems.

The modern Liangshan Yi syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for schools, government documents, newspapers, and literature. It standardizes the Liangshan dialect; Yi speakers using other varieties do not all share it. Do not assume this modern reading in an older manuscript.

How do you type ꊛ?

Type zot in a Yi input method and select the matching candidate.

Yi Pinyin is the romanized spelling used to enter Yi syllables. Microsoft's Windows guide (2024) describes typing a syllable and choosing from the resulting Yi-character candidates. Here, final t marks high tone: it is a tone letter, not a final consonant.

In the Liangshan Yi standard, this is an ordinary written syllable; readers may need the surrounding Nuosu word to interpret it.

On its own, ꊛ does not give a complete word or reaction.
