yi syllable zyp

Yi Syllable Zyp

684/1165

ꊫ is one syllable written in standardized Liangshan Yi, so on its own it does not name a whole message. It records the syllable written with Latin letters as zyp; the final p marks low-falling tone. Yi writing has regional traditions, ritual manuscripts and letters, followed by a Liangshan standard.

Text symbol

What ꊫ means

It writes one Nuosu syllable. In standardized Liangshan Yi writing, ꊫ represents the syllable written with Latin letters as zyp. The final p marks a low-falling tone; it is not a final consonant or a translation. By itself, the character names a syllable, not an English word or a complete message.

The wider Yi script's earliest surviving example usually cited is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485. In later traditional use, bimo ritual specialists copied ritual texts by hand across generations; by the mid-20th century, elite Liangshan families also used the script for letters. A standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to represent the dialect more consistently and support literacy.

This character belongs to the standardized Liangshan syllabary. Yi writing has regional forms in Liangshan, Yunnan and Guizhou; the modern Unicode syllabary derives from traditional Yi ideographs, and this character represents Liangshan speech rather than every Yi language.

Why does zyp end in p?

It marks the syllable's low-falling tone. In the Liangshan Yi romanization, t marks high tone, x marks secondary high tone, no ending letter marks mid-level tone, and p marks low-falling tone. These letters guide pronunciation; they are not English words to sound out.

Each Yi sign represents a syllable and sits alongside other signs within a word.

Questions people ask

Is ꊫ an emoji?

No. It is a written syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi script.

Why is ꊫ a box?

The text is still ꊫ; a missing-glyph box means the active font lacks a usable Yi glyph or the browser did not select one. As of 2026, display depends on installed fonts and browser font fallback.
