What 𞤮 means
It marks an o-type vowel in Fulani writing.
An Adlam nukta, a small vowel mark, can refine a vowel's quality; the lengthener 𞥅 after this letter marks long /oː/.
Adlam took shape in N'Zérékoré, Guinea, in 1989. Brothers Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry designed the alphabet to represent Fulani sounds more clearly than inconsistent Arabic-script spellings and Latin spellings that varied by region. Adlam is written right to left, in a setting influenced by Arabic writing, though its letter shapes were mostly designed anew. By 2019, its use also included education, language preservation, and Fulani cultural pride. Unicode documented further letterform revisions in 2024, so fonts can draw the same character differently.
How can I type the Adlam letter O?
Use an Adlam keyboard layout.
On Windows 10, choose an Adlam keyboard. On mobile, some layouts put less common characters behind a long-press key.
In Adlam text, this is an ordinary vowel letter; outside it, readers may not recognize the character.
