What 𞤴 means
Use an Adlam keyboard layout, or enter code point U1E934.
A standard y key produces a completely different character — use an Adlam or Fulfulde keyboard layout, or code point U1E934 as detailed in the typing list.
What sound does 𞤴 represent?
The /j/ consonant — the y in “yes” — in Fula.
Adlam was devised in the late 1980s by brothers Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry because Arabic-based writing fit Fula poorly and Latin spellings varied by country.
Fula, spoken across West Africa and also called Fulfulde or Pular, is still written in Latin and Arabic orthographies too — so 𞤴 in a text marks Adlam writing, never a decorative Latin y.
Why does 𞤴 change shape in text?
Its font and neighboring letters change its visible form.
Adlam can join letters into a cursive line or keep them separate and block-like; joined forms suit running text, the others headlines and teaching material.
The script also runs right to left, so in mixed text read the Adlam run in its own direction.
Neutral — a lone 𞤴 reads as Adlam text, not a social reaction.
A different shape is not a different letter — check font and position before assuming the wrong character.

4 readingsThe /j/ consonant inside the Fula word.
Worth knowing
- The script's name spells its first four letters — alif, daali, laam, miim — and doubles as a Fula acronym: “the alphabet that protects the peoples from vanishing.”
- Early Adlam had small letters only; the capitals were added later — so 𞤒 is younger than 𞤴.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𞤴 show up as an empty box?
A missing font, not a broken character. Install an Adlam-capable font such as Noto Sans Adlam or Adlam Display, or update the app — the letter itself is fine.
