What ً means
It marks an -an ending when reading without a pause. In Arabic, كِتَابًا is pronounced kitāban: “a book” as a direct object. This grammatical form is called the accusative; “a” rather than “the” makes it indefinite.
At a regular pause, the n usually drops and the ending becomes long -ā.
Where did fathatan come from?
It evolved within Arabic notation for pronunciation and recitation. Early Quran manuscripts used red dots for vowel endings, including tanwin. These systems developed toward modern vowel signs around the ninth century, helping readers preserve the spoken reading.
Why is fathatan omitted?
Ordinary Arabic prose often leaves pronunciation marks unwritten. Readers rely on context. Quranic texts and lessons show more marks to guide reading; other texts may mark only selected words.
Read fathatan as a spelling and pronunciation cue, not an emotional reaction.
Do not add a second vowel for the support alif.

1Why is fathatan written with an alif?
The alif usually supports the spelling, not an extra vowel. Typesetting may put fathatan over that alif or the preceding letter; the connected reading stays -an.
